Born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1963.
Gearon’s photographs focus on her children and family, featuring them in spontaneous and unassuming poses. In her first solo exhibition in the U.S., Gearon transforms her simple and unpolished family snapshots into powerful visual statements, suddenly made dramatic (even painterly) by their new large scale and brilliant coloration. In this series, Gearon photographs her children as they are launched into adult situations, creating scenes that are loaded with poignancy, candor and implication. These children assume a new identity in each situation as they manage and negotiate the grown-up world around them. In these images, Gearon’s young subjects take on a maturity that is at once deceiving and eerily real. In every case, Gearon allows the viewer to complete her visual narrative.
