Franz Barwig (sometimes written Franz bar TIG ) was born in the Czech town of Schoenau. His style of sculpture was a blend of modern and traditional tendencies. Barwig was well known for his animal sculptures in both wood and bronze. Figurative sculpture is rare in his oeuvre. He was a teacher in Villach and also at the Viennese college of arts and crafts from1908-24. It was during this time that the present sculpture of the “Young Lad” was created, a blend of modern secessionism and old fairytale innocence. |
